We're stuck between two communities

The questions that break a tie once the tours all start blurring together.

By this point you have toured enough that the buildings have merged. These are the questions that still separate them.

Short answer

The questions that break a tie once the tours all start blurring together.

What to do, in order

  1. Compare the all-in numbers, not the base rents. Ask each community for the total monthly cost at your parent's assessed care level, in writing, plus what triggers the next level and what it costs.
  2. Compare the rate increase histories. Three years of actual increases from each. This single question separates operators more reliably than any tour.
  3. Compare overnight staffing, not daytime. Daytime ratios look similar everywhere. Overnight is where they diverge and where problems happen.
  4. Pull both ODH inspection records. Read the surveyor narratives rather than counting citations, and ask each administrator about a specific finding. How they answer is itself data.
  5. Ask the Assisted Living Waiver question of both. If private funds might run out, a community that does not hold a waiver provider agreement is a future forced move regardless of how good it looks today.
  6. Go back unannounced. Same building, evening on a weekday. Whichever one still looks right is your answer.

Questions Cleveland families ask

What should I look for on a senior living tour in the Cleveland area?

Ask to see the special care unit disclosure if touring memory care, request the facility's current ODH license status and recent inspection history, and observe staff-to-resident interactions directly rather than relying only on the sales presentation. Also ask specific questions about staffing levels at night and on weekends, since Ohio regulations require adequate staffing without specifying a fixed ratio.

What are red flags in an Ohio assisted living contract I should watch for?

Watch for vague or open-ended fee schedules that don't clearly separate room and board from care service charges, unclear discharge or transfer criteria, and any language suggesting the facility can exceed what an RCF is licensed to provide, like extended skilled nursing beyond the 120-day cap, without a clear written extension process. Also check that any memory care special care unit disclosure required under OAC 3701-16-07(F)(5) is actually provided in writing, not just described verbally.

How do I manage my aging parent's care in Cleveland if I live out of state?

Start by identifying the Area Agency on Aging for your parent's specific county, Western Reserve for Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, or Geauga, or Direction Home Akron Canton for Summit or Portage, since they can coordinate assessments and connect you to local services remotely. Set up a local point of contact, a geriatric care manager, trusted neighbor, or family friend, for situations that need in-person follow-up, and confirm in advance who the hospital or facility should call in an emergency.
